A coffee bar designed to slow down and turn the pause of drinking coffee into a ritual under the night sky.
The starting point
It all started with a phenomenon that has always seemed strange to me: the blood moon, that night when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon and tints it a very particular red.
For the Mexica and the Maya, eclipses were powerful messages from the gods. The Inca believed a jaguar attacked and ate the moon, so they shouted and made their dogs howl to scare it away.
Miztli Cualo
Nahuatl
“When the moon is eaten”: a lunar eclipse. Miztli is the moon; cualo, to be eaten or eclipsed.

The jaguar
I brought back the jaguar as a symbol of strength, nature and a connection to the night. The challenge was keeping all that imagery from feeling like a collection of references thrown in for the sake of it, and making it an identity that would work in a real place.
A can to take the night anywhere.

From model to render
I wanted to imagine how the space would feel, so I built a 3D visualization of the coffee bar, outdoors: the bar, the seating and the fire pits are all part of the experience of being out at night, watching the sky.
